Pin-Up Tom-Boy from Thrift Store Find

Kari Kachelmacher, Designer
Minneapolis, MN

This upcycled garment was inspired by the pin-up bra of the 1950s as well as the crop pant of the 1980s. I wanted to make this design have contrasting concepts of feminine and masculine while still looking cohesive enough for all the garments to be in the same outfit.

Every single piece of clothing and closure in this outfit was made from recycled fabric from Goodwill and thrift store finds. No article of clothing was as it was to begin, because the whole idea of my senior line collection was to take unfashionable, inexpensive, used pieces and turn them into something amazing.

Retro Pin-up from Thrift Store Find
Kari Kachelmacher, Designer
Minneapolis, MN

This upcycled garment was inspired from the 1950s pin-up with high-waisted Capri pants and the 1980s space-retro crop-top. The concept came from a “failed project” during college. I made a pair of Bermuda shorts with pockets that looked like seams.

I used a woman’s union dress and a 1970s kimono. The fabric cost next to nothing since it came from used garments. The real value of the garments came with the labor only, which is why I think I love the concept of recycled clothes so much; it takes one major variable, the materials, out of the cost equation.
