Cameroon Vintage Print Swim Cover-up and Beach Tote

Kristy Janigo, Graduate Student, U of MN

My great aunt collected authentic printed textiles from her lifelong mission work as a nurse in Africa. She trained young women to be midwives and her village gave her a highly honorable title equivalent to “queen.” When she died, she left behind these textiles. As the fashion enthusiast in the family, I inherited much of her jewelry and textiles.

I wanted to create a line of clothing to commemorate my aunt’s work and accomplishments so I created a line of swim cover-ups with matching beach totes, via my own original patternwork. This tote has the Cameroon print on the outside and a solid color on the inside, so it is reversible. The contrast yellow fabric is from secondhand fabric scraps.

My client wanted to redesign a dress she had worn only once to a high school dance. This garment was rescued from the waste stream with a low waste result, and this young woman learned firsthand that little-worn clothing is not trash. She came to see clothing as malleable throughout the process of redesign.

The bodice itself has 20+ pattern pieces so I used all of the fashion fabric in creating the bodice, petals, and overskirt. The only added materials were the half yard of lining, a new invisible zipper, some boning, thread, and interfacing. The patternmaking was labor intensive and time consuming but the result was worth the effort for the client.
