Little Black Party Dress

Melanie Carrico, Faculty, UNC, Greensboro

This dress was created to align ideas of sustainability and zero waste with aesthetics for mass production. This was accomplished by using a traditional silhouette and garment category, the little black dress, often worn at parties.

To achieve zero waste, the design began by using the letters “p-a-r-t-y” to form the pattern shapes. The rest of the dress emerged through many draped muslins and the letters were not kept together within the layout but were rearranged as needed to create the desired outcome.
